Car Insurance GMC (Car Insurance). I have a 97 dodge grand caravan 3.8 with a random misfire?I have a 97 dodge grand caravan 3.8 with a random misfire? The thing is, it ran fine until it began to have fuel pump issues. The car would start, but then it would die as soon as it ran the fuel out of the pump. We first replaced the fuel filter since that is the cheapest route, that fixed the problem short term, but it started again. After a while it started again and we replaced the fuel pump and so again as you should do to maintain the warranty on the new fuel pump we replaced the fuel filter again. After doing this the car began to misfire horribly. When you hook it up to a hand held computer it reads random misfire. On a regular pull without too much torque you dont even notice the miss if you dont give it too much gas, but on a hill or with too much torque it misses and pops like there is firecrackers going off under the hood. We were thinking it needed plugs and plug wires but then I realized none of this happened until the fuel pump problems making me think this could be an issue related to this that could just be a smaller problem related to a vaccum or a computer issue. I dont think it a coil pack and I dont think the plugs and wires would just go bad coincidently with the fuel pump issues, or maybe it was never the fuel pump at all which means we sunk nearly 500 bucks into the van for no reason at all. Anyone have any ideas? We are preparing to sell it, but I dont want to take a huge loss on it, since it is in really good condition other wise and the van kbb value in good condition is around $4000 and in its current running condition no one is going to want to pay more than a grand for it. Also, when we went to pick it up from the mechanic to take it home last night, it did the same thing it had done before we replaced the fuel pump, it would start, run the gas out of the pump and die. It took several attempts of taking the key forward to prime the pump and finally trying to pop it into gear and learch it forward before it finally caught and started running before I was able to get it home. Making me also think that the fuel pump was never the issue in the first place. well... a fuel pump randomly shutting off like that is the fuel pump relay switch. even when bad it will let it turn back on. and but now the misfire wow i dont see how changing a fuel pump could cause that unless it wasnt installed properly and isnt getting the correct amount of fuel which results in more air than gas and will cause it to back fire and pop and miss. throwing fuel air ratio off. but there is also oxygen sensors under there if u knocked one off some how it would do that as well cause the control ur fuel air mixtures. unless sum one did change the spark plugs or plug wires? if u did then id assume a common mistake of swapping 2 wires was made... throwing timing off. Hi take all the spark plugs out and check that the gaps are correct-I bought a used car that did a similar thing to yours and it drove me nuts for about a month. And yes I also doubt that there was anything wrong with your first fuel pump did you think it could be the pump relay? the relay is what turns the pump on and off as you drive. also it could be the fuel regulator on the fuel rail. it could be not letting the right amount of fuel to the injectors. pull the hose off the regulator. if there,s gas in the hose then replace the regulator. you might have spent all that money on a fuel pump which you might not have needed. GMC . What Is the Difference Between Gas & Diesel Engine Motor Oil?Cans of gasoline engine oil usually have an American Petroleum Institute (API) starburst label that certifies their use for gasoline engines. This distinction may seem odd but not all motor oil is good for gas engines. The difference is especially of interest to those who notice that diesel oil is much cheaper and would like to use it in their gas engines to save money. Catalytic Converter The catalytic converter is a porous metal filter located along the exhaust line between the engine and the muffler. The metal matrix inside speeds the conversion of toxic emissions into benign products. Some emissions however, can damage the converter's ability to perform this catalysis, such as lead, zinc and phosphorous. A failing catalytic converter can lead to your car's failing an emissions test. Since diesel engines don't use the same kind of catalytic converter, diesel oil has a higher zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) level than gasoline engine oil, to form a film on bearings and the camshaft to prevent wear. ZDDP contains both zinc and phosphorous. This content is the leading reason diesel oil can't be used in gas engines. Viscosity Range Diesel oil is more viscous, in other words heavier or thicker. This is needed because there's more space between rod and crankshaft bearings in a diesel engine. Thin oil would drain from these spaces. Obversely, putting too thick of an oil in a gas engine will make it run hotter. Heavier viscosity is bad for a gas engine on startup and in cold weather. You would also loose compression of the oil, slowing its circulation into the engine. Additive Levels The level of detergents and other additives is higher for diesel, to combat the higher soot levels of diesel engines and take advantage of the difference in the catalytic converter in diesels. In a gas engine, diesel oil's greater concentration of detergent, or scrubbing agent, can remove manufacturer's deposits on the cylinder wall that help seal the combustion gases. This can lead to smoking inside the engine, which can in turn damage the catalytic converter. Replacement Intervals Some motor oil additives serve to lower the viscosity on startup and raise it at high temperatures. Diesel oil has a longer life span because of the higher level of such additives. Specifically, higher additive levels in diesel oil means you can drive further before they degrade to levels too low for a gas engine. Proper viscosity at proper temperatures prevents wear and strain on the engine. The extra additives in diesel oil don't help much in a gas engine, since diesel oil is usually sold at higher viscosities than gas engines use. The viscosity is therefore mismatched right from the start. Use of Diesel Oil in Gas Engine You can use diesel in cars older than model year 1975, when catalytic converter were first mandated. You must match the viscosity, which could be difficult considering the higher viscosity requirement of diesel engines. Too high of viscosity, in a gas engine, would provide poor protection on startup and during the winter. The higher viscosity would also lower gas engine fuel efficiency slightly. If you do decide to use one type of oil in the other type of engine, you can tell which is for gas engines by the "S" in the oil can coding ("S" for "servicing"). "C" is for diesel engines ("C" for "commercial").
GMC . How to Convert a Volkswagen Beetle Diesel Engine to Run on Used Vegetable OilUsing veggie oil for fuel is an environmentally friendly and inexpensive approach to driving. Volkswagen Beetles with a diesel fuel engine have an advantage when attempting to convert to used vegetable oil as an alternative for fuel, since only diesel engines can be used for this purpose. Used veggie oil as a source of fuel is a great alternative in warmer climates. In climates that reach temperatures below 25 degrees fahrenheit it may not be as convenient, because the vegetable oil will gel and could clog the engine. It is possible to have the engine switch back and forth from diesel to veggie oil as needed to prevent this from happening. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Vegetable oil fuel conversion kit Waste vegetable oil 0.5 micron thick filter bags Step by Step : 1 Check your diesel engine for rubber seals. Older models of diesel engines were made with these and they will become damaged with the use of vegetable oil as fuel. Newer diesel engines do not have this problem. 2 Buy your vegetable oil fuel conversion kit from a reliable source and unless you have mechanical experience with engines, avoid at-home installation kits. 3 Commission a mechanic to perform the installation of your veggie oil fuel conversion kit. The kit will be placed in the trunk of the car and will be hooked up to the radiator. Having the conversion kit connected to the radiator makes the veggie oil heat up and become more liquid before it enters the engine as fuel. A switch that will enable you to manually choose if you want diesel or veggie oil fuel will be installed on your Beetle's dashboard, as well as a fuel gauge that will measure the vegetable oil fuel level. 4 Visit local restaurant to find a good source for used veggie oil. Oriental restaurants most commonly have the cleanest waste oil and are usually glad to make riddance of it without having to pay the required government disposal fees. The cleanest waste oils should be amber in color making it easier to filter for using as fuel. 5 Fill up your veggie oil tank with waste oil, passing it through a 0.5 micron thick filter bag that will remove food debris that may clog your car's engine. 6 Turn on the engine and warm up the vegetable oil by using diesel fuel for the first five minutes. Wait a couple more minutes if the weather is below 40 degrees fahrenheit. After the required time, you can turn the fuel option switch to veggie oil fuel. When you are ready to turn the car off, make sure you switch back to diesel fuel five minutes prior to shutting off the engine. This will flush all the veggie oil out of it, preventing any gelling of the oil inside the engine as it cools down. This is especially necessary if you anticipate a temperature drop or if you will not use the car for an extended period of time. Tips & Warnings If your car is still under manufacturer's warranty, check with your dealer to make sure performing this conversion will not void your warranty. I know this because I've done it, and those teeny greasy zerk fittings are hard to hang on to. But if you goof, take heart. If "Thumbs" Sclar can do it, so can you! 7. If one or more of your ball joints boots has burst, have it (or them) replaced immediately. The parts that these joints protect get a lot of action, and you can be in for a very expensive job (or risk losing your ability to steer) after a very short trip on a nonfunctioning ball joint. 2 CQ Part III: Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System \V ^ When you buy a new vehicle, ask the service manager if there are any trouble "~^ spots on the model that may benefit from having grease fittings inserted. I had several installed on my new truck for very little money. If you have a persistent squeak, you may want to find out whether having a grease fitting installed in the area will quiet things down. Lubricating the Suspension System The suspension system technically includes the steering linkage, but in my mind, it's easier to deal with these things in terms of the functions they perform. Therefore, try to see the steering linkage as being concerned with the horizontal directions in which the car can go (left and right) and the suspension system as being concerned with the vertical movement (up and down) of the car as it travels over the road. The following sections detail how to lubricate parts of your suspension system. (If the suspension system itself gets out of whack, get a professional to diagnose and deal with the trouble.) GMC . Dodge Intrepid. * Lubricating the springs Various types of springs are used to absorb bumps and keep your vehicle level on turns. These can be coil springs, leaf springs, torsion bars, or air springs. Some cars have leaf springs at the rear wheels and coil springs at the front wheels. Some luxury cars, full-size trucks, and buses have air suspension systems. For more detailed information about each type of spring, see Chapter 11. The following list explains what you need to lubricate and how to do it, depending on the type of spring that you have: " Leaf springs: Each end of a set of leaf springs is attached to the frame at the rear of the car with fittings that enable the springs to bend and move freely. These fittings usually have rubber bushings that enable the fittings to bend and twist freely and also absorb some of the vibration and prevent it from reaching the passenger compartment (see Figure 16-6). If your leaf springs have more than one leaf per side, called multiple leaf springs, there may be a piece of plastic between the leaves. That plastic, called a slipper, can be lubed with suspension grease to prevent noise as the leaves slide over one another during jounce and rebound. .
